Tokyo is no stranger to technology. From robot staffed hotels to futuristic public toilets, there’s a good reason the Japanese capital consistently sits atop the ICI’s annual list of the 500 most innovative cities in the world.
It’s a place where the Worldcoin protocol in general, and the Orb in particular, fit right in.
In April, both of them made their Japanese debut: first at the Pragma conference on April 13, then at ETHGlobal Tokyo from April 14-16. The events, and those that followed, marked the first time team members from both the Worldcoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity (TFH) were on hand to engage and build with the community in Japan, and the results were better than we could have hoped for.

ETHGlobal Tokyo hackathon
Developers from across the country and around the world participated in the ETHGlobal Tokyo hackathon. Notably, nearly one in six of their projects were built using the World ID SDK. Take a look at some of the most impressive entries below.
Developed by @LucemansNL and @AnaArsonist, WorldName is an on-chain ENS subname registry that lets any Worldcoin-verified human claim an @ENSdomains subdomain. This project took home the Best Overall prize.

An on-chain ENS subname registry that leverages the @worldcoin protocol for sybil-resistance to issue subnames to anyone who is a verified human ✅

Kizuna Protocol, which won the Best Public Good Use Case prize, enables undercollateralized on-chain lending using World ID as a reputation system. With this protocol, users can borrow more money than they have assets—something that hasn’t traditionally been possible at scale in web3 given the risks.

The Best Governance App prize was awarded to ZKredentials, a decentralized resume verification platform for anon developers that leverages World ID to verify devs are real and unique humans. It was built by @chadxeth, Eric Mong and Bennett Yong.
My team and I put together ZKredentials, an anon dev portfolio builder over the weekend at @ETHGlobal and managed to secure ~14000 USD worth of prizes! 🥳🥳Really appreciate all the protocols who awarded us and special thanks to @gnosischain for the support!#ETHGlobalTokyo pic.twitter.com/LVv8YMSbJT

Japan’s first Worldcoin meetup
After the conference, it was time to host the first Worldcoin public meetup in Japan, featuring team members from TFH and some of the prize winners from the ETHGlobal Tokyo hackathon.
The event, which took place at @SingularityTYO NFT Cafe and Bar, was co-hosted by @0x_yuzu and featured an education-focused presentation on the Worldcoin protocol as well as the opportunity to ask questions to TFH team members. Visitors were also able to verify their unique World IDs at an Orb.
