A new survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of World finds that nearly 3 in 4 online daters (74%) say they have suspected that someone they matched with on a dating app wasn’t real.
Online dating is changing and trust is the new chemistry. Singles are fed up with catfishing, AI-generated profiles, bots, and scams.
World released the results of a new survey* exploring what singles think about trust, Proof of Human, and dating apps. The key finding: 81% of singles would be much more likely to use a dating app if every profile was confirmed as belonging to a real person.
The trust gap in online dating, according to singles
- 57% say fake/deceptive profiles are among the biggest problems on dating apps today.
- Nearly 3 in 4 online daters (74%) say they have suspected that someone they matched with on a dating app wasn’t real.
- 70% would rather match with an average-looking person they know is real than a very attractive profile they can’t be sure about.
- 70% say knowing there’s a real person behind the profile is most important when deciding whether to match with someone, compared to only 4% who say height.
- 46% would be more likely to meet IRL sooner if they knew their match was a real person.

In the new world of dating, being real matters more than ever to singles
- 81% would be more likely to use a dating app if every profile was confirmed as belonging to a real person.
- 4 in 5 (80%) would take steps to prove there’s a real person behind their own profile if their matches did the same.

This is the challenge World ID was built to solve. It is a universal set of human Proofs that puts people first on the internet, from dating and live events, to gaming, social media and more.
With World ID, dating app users can prove they’re a unique person on the internet and meet other requirements, such as being over the age of 18, without having to share any personal data like their name, birthday, or address. Claiming a Proof of Human takes about two minutes, and you can use it to sign into online apps and services.
Dating apps are already adopting the technology. Proof of Human on Tinder is available in Japan and the U.S., and those who verify can display a human badge on their profile indicating they’re a verified, real person.
“It’s absolutely critical to Tinder’s mission that every single user on the platform knows there’s a real person behind every profile they see,” said Mark Kantor, Chief Product Officer at Tinder during World’s Lift Off event earlier this year.

Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of World from August 20-21, 2026, among 892 single adults ages 18+, among whom 649 have used online dating apps. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +/- 3.6 percentage points using a 95% confidence level. This credible interval will be wider among subsets of the surveyed population of interest.
