How grants connect to the Worldcoin mission and global adoption of World ID

Dec 08, 2023 5 Minute Read

More than 4 billion people worldwide lack a legal, digitally-verifiable identity—a significant blocker to accessing financial services. The Worldcoin project is working to increase global access to these services.

WLD grants have the potential to accelerate that mission: tokens freely distributed to anyone who is eligible simply for being a verified unique human. If you’re eligible and have already downloaded World App and verified your World ID at an Orb, you can start receiving tokens now. If you haven’t verified at an Orb yet, you can reserve your Worldcoin tokens now and they'll be ready for you as soon as you complete the verification process.

Understanding Worldcoin grants

Verified World ID holders who live in an eligible country* can receive tokens. This helps, among other things, support community governance of the project.

The “Grants” tab in World App displays how much Worldcoin a person may receive. This amount varies depending on when the person was verified. For example, if a person verified between December 4 and December 17, 2023, they are eligible to receive 81 WLD. After that period, the amount decreases by 1 WLD every two weeks (subject to change), encouraging users to verify their ID sooner rather than later.

Receiving Worldcoin grants

Receiving Worldcoin tokens involves two types of Worldcoin grants:

  • Welcome Grant: Once you verify your World ID at an Orb, eligible individuals can immediately receive a Welcome Grant of 10 WLD (subject to change).
  • Recurring Grant: Every two weeks, eligible individuals can receive a Recurring Grant of 3 WLD (subject to change).

To receive your Worldcoin tokens:

  • Download World App
  • Verify your World ID at an Orb
  • Open World App to the “Grants” tab and tap “Claim Grant”

If push notifications are enabled, World App will notify you every two weeks when a new grant is available, making it easy to keep track of and receive your tokens.

Reserving Worldcoin grants

As the Worldcoin project works to provide humanness verification services in more countries, it is committed to helping more people access the digital economy. As a result, in addition to access to World App, eligible individuals can reserve Worldcoin grants prior to receiving a verified World ID. These grants can be redeemed after verifying your World ID at an Orb within 12 months.

  • After downloading World App, navigate to the “Grants” tab and tap the “Reserve Grant” button. Each grant is available to be reserved for a limited time.
  • Tap on the “Reserve for now” button to reserve the allotted number of WLD tokens for up to 12 months.

Reserved WLD tokens are visible in your World App wallet and can be received once you’ve fully verified your World ID at an Orb.

After verifying your World ID at an Orb, you’ll see a prompt in the “Worldcoin Grant” tab in World App to redeem your reserved grants and receive the allotted amount of reserved WLD tokens. Follow the prompt instructions to receive your tokens*.

Increasing global interest in Worldcoin and World ID

Interest in access to Worldcoin and proof of personhood technologies like World ID is continuing to grow globally.

In 2023, World ID verifications jumped from under a million in January to more than 2.5 million by the end of November. Additional Orb locations are also opening in both new and existing cities to help make sure everyone who wants to be a part of the Worldcoin community can do so.

Argentina

In Argentina, a global leader for blockchain innovation and crypto adoption, more than 360K people have now verified their World ID. That’s close to 1% of the population in one of the most populated countries in South America.

As summer approaches in the southern hemisphere, local Worldcoin Operators are forecasted to help an additional 20K-30K new people digitally verify their humanness every week in cities like Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mar del Plata and beyond.

Chile

In neighboring Chile, more than a quarter million people have verified their World ID as Orb locations have steadily grown to include Santiago, Concepcion, Curico and Viña del Mar. Local operations are projected to expand further over the summer to meet demand.

Germany

After launching Berlin’s first Orb location halfway through the year, Worldcoin is expanding access to World ID verifications throughout the country to meet growing demand. Orbs are already available in Berlin at Bikini and Saturn Alexanderplatz and in Nuremberg at Joseph’s Innovation Lab, with additional locations in cities like Munich, Leipzig, Stuttgart and Cologne set to open before the end of the year.

“We are no longer alone on the Internet,” said Alex Blania, CEO and co-founder of Tools for Humanity, the initial development company of the Worldcoin project, in a recent interview with Forbes Germany. “Human verification online will only continue to become more important.”

Portugal

More than 200,000 people in Portugal, or 2% of the population, have now verified their World ID. Lisbon-based Talent Protocol has also integrated with the World ID protocol to better connect web3 builders across Europe and incentivize them to support each other and grow together.

Currently, Orbs are available in 10 locations across the country’s two largest cities, Lisbon and Porto. That number is set to expand by more than 50% by the end of 2023.

Spain

Demand for World ID has grown significantly in Spain, a country that’s helping lead the EU in AI development. To meet it, nearly 20 Orb locations were made available across Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca. These have already enabled more than 300K people to digitally verify their humanness.

In late November, the country set a new record for daily verifications with more than 2,000, prompting the addition of new Orb locations in the southern cities of Murcia, Málaga and Granada. More cities are projected to be added by the end of the year.

Eligibility for Worldcoin (WLD) tokens is restricted based on geography, age, and other factors. WLD are not available to, or intended for, people or companies who are residents of, or are located, incorporated or have a registered agent in, the United States or certain other restricted territories.
