Introducing Face Auth: Worldcoin’s newest private, security-enhancing tech

Sep 19, 2024 1 Minute Read

Introducing Face Auth, a new security measure for World ID that’s currently being piloted in select locations.

What is Face Auth?

Face Auth is a private 1:1 face comparison that ensures only the person who verified their World ID at an orb can use it.

It provides increased security for your World ID during actions like online purchases, financial transactions, secure sign-in applications and much more.

How does Face Auth work?

Face Auth works by comparing a selfie taken from your phone against the images captured by the orb that were securely stored on your phone (and only on your phone) during verification.

The entire process takes place locally on-device. The new security layer further puts verified World ID holders in control of their personal information (including the selfie) by storing it only on their phone, encrypted with their key.

  1. While verifying with World ID, you’ll be asked to take a selfie.
  2. The selfie is compared against the high quality image taken during orb verification and only stored securely on your device
  3. If the images are a match, the World ID verification is a success.

Privacy in the age of AI

The release of Face Auth is the most recent example, following the launch of SMPC earlier this year, of Worldcoin’s four key privacy principles put into action:

  • Security: Secured by math
  • Anonymity: Move freely online
  • Transparency: Built in the open
  • Choice & Control: Your data, your rules
